Plato's Cave Framed Canvas – Classical Philosophy Wall Art
From £30.00
Chained in a cave since birth, Plato's prisoners watch shadows thrown on the wall in front of them and take those shadows for the whole world. One breaks free, climbs towards the light and learns what was casting them. The Plato's Cave Framed Canvas renders that moment as classical philosophy wall art: a shadowed corridor in warm sepia, and at the far end a lone figure stepping into the glare of the opening.
The palette is deliberately narrow — burnt umber, deep brown, one wash of gold at the cave mouth — so the image reads as light against dark rather than as colour. The matte coating earns its place here. A design built almost entirely from shadow will flare under a spotlight on a glossy surface; this one holds its dark passages.
It belongs in rooms where thinking is the point. Behind a desk, beside a bookshelf, in a reading corner. On its own the square format holds a wall; grouped with other pieces from the philosophy range it sets the tone for the whole arrangement.

Common Questions
What is the allegory of the cave actually about?
It appears in Book VII of Plato's Republic. The prisoners stand for people who mistake appearances for reality, and the escape stands for education. The difficulty of the climb is the point: Plato expected the returning prisoner to be disbelieved rather than thanked.
Where does this piece hang best?
On a wall lit from the side or above rather than one facing a bright window. The composition runs dark to light, so it reads properly when nothing is competing with the glow at the cave mouth.
Which size should I choose?
Above a desk or console, 16″ or 20″ sits comfortably. For a chimney breast or a large empty wall, 30″ and above carries the distance. The 6″ to 12″ sizes work best clustered together or propped on a shelf ledge.
Is the frame included?
Yes. The canvas is stretched onto a pine frame in your chosen colour and arrives with sawtooth hardware fitted, so no separate framing is needed.

Choosing a Size
Available sizes are listed in the size selector above. As a rule, a canvas should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs over — measure the wall before choosing, and mark the outline with masking tape if you are between two sizes.

Canvas Questions
Quick answers to the things people ask most.
Does it arrive ready to hang?
Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.
Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?
It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.
Will the colours fade?
The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.
When will it arrive, and can I return it?
Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.
Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.
If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.
Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?
Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.
Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
