Descartes set out to doubt everything he could possibly doubt — his senses, his memory, the existence of the world outside his head — and found one thing that survived the demolition. Something was doing the doubting. The I Think Therefore I Am Framed Canvas takes that single surviving certainty and gives it the weight of a monument, in the tradition of classical philosophy wall art.

A sepia statue sits at the centre, head lowered in thought, with the line set in capitals beneath it. Aged gold lettering and laurel detail run across a deep, textured ground. The gold is restrained rather than metallic, so it reads as worn leaf rather than foil, and the matte surface keeps the darker half of the composition from turning into a mirror under a ceiling light.

The piece works hardest where decisions get made — a home office, a consulting room, a study. It also lands as a graduation gift for anyone who has spent a term arguing about epistemology.

Common Questions

Who said I think, therefore I am?

René Descartes, the French philosopher and mathematician. The Latin form, cogito ergo sum, appears in his Discourse on the Method of 1637; the same argument runs through the Meditations four years later.

What is the argument actually claiming?

Not that thinking is the purpose of life. It is a foundation-hunting move: even a determined sceptic cannot doubt that there is a doubter, so Descartes treats his own existence as the one certainty he can build the rest of his philosophy on.

Which frame colour suits it?

Black and Espresso sink into the dark ground of the artwork and make it read as a single object. White and Natural do the opposite, lifting the piece off a dark wall and giving it a lighter, more contemporary edge.

Choosing a Size

Available sizes are listed in the size selector above. As a rule, a canvas should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs over — measure the wall before choosing, and mark the outline with masking tape if you are between two sizes.

Canvas Questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.

Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?

It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.

Will the colours fade?

The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.

When will it arrive, and can I return it?

Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.

Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.

If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.

Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?

Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.

Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
