A Roman bust holds the centre of this piece, lit from one side against a near-black ground, with three words set beneath it in aged gold. The Character Is Destiny Framed Canvas is Stoic philosophy wall art built on a line from Heraclitus — the claim that what happens to a person is not handed down by the gods but written by the habits they keep.

The design is severe on purpose. Deep blacks, one metal tone, no decoration beyond a narrow rule and a laurel mark. That restraint is why it survives being hung in a working room instead of a display room: there is nothing in it to tire of. The matte coating holds the blacks properly, which is the whole job on a composition this dark.

It reads well behind a desk, in a training space or a hallway you pass every morning. In the larger sizes, on a plain wall with a lamp nearby, it does something closer to what a bust in an alcove does.

Care Instructions

Dark canvases show dust sooner than pale ones, so pass a dry, soft cloth over the surface every few weeks. Use a barely damp cloth for marks and dry it off straight away. Avoid solvents, sprays and abrasive cloths, and keep the piece away from damp and direct sun.

Common Questions

Who said character is destiny?

Heraclitus of Ephesus, writing around 500 BC. The Greek, ethos anthropoi daimon, is more literally rendered as a person's character is their guiding spirit, and the compressed English version has been in circulation since the nineteenth century.

Is this a Stoic idea?

Heraclitus predates the Stoics by two centuries, but they took a great deal from him and the sentiment sits squarely in their tradition: fortune is not the thing to work on, conduct is. It is filed with our Stoic pieces for that reason.

Which frame colour works with a dark artwork?

Black merges with the ground so the image appears to float. Espresso adds warmth against oak or walnut. Natural and White draw a visible border, which helps if the wall behind is itself dark.

Choosing a Size

Available sizes are listed in the size selector above. As a rule, a canvas should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs over — measure the wall before choosing, and mark the outline with masking tape if you are between two sizes.

Canvas Questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.

Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?

It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.

Will the colours fade?

The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.

When will it arrive, and can I return it?

Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.

Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.

If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.

Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?

Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.

Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
