Two words were carved into the forecourt of the temple of Apollo at Delphi, where Greeks travelled for centuries to ask the oracle about their futures. Before you get an answer about the world, the inscription says, get an answer about yourself. The Know Thyself Framed Canvas puts that maxim on the wall as Socrates quote wall art, set beneath a classical bust in weathered gold lettering.
The bust is rendered in warm sepia against a mid-toned ground, with a fine decorative border drawn around the whole composition. Detail survives at close range — the chisel marks in the marble, the wear in the letterforms — while the matte finish keeps the piece calm from across the room rather than glossy and insistent.

Dust the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth. If a mark needs attention, use a barely damp cloth and dry the area immediately. Keep away from steam, damp walls and long hours of direct sun, and never use spray cleaners on the canvas.
Common Questions
Did Socrates say know thyself?
The phrase is a Delphic maxim, inscribed at the temple of Apollo long before Socrates. He is closely associated with it because he made self-examination the centre of his method, and Plato has him quote it in several dialogues, including the Charmides and the Protagoras.
What does it ask of you?
Less introspection than honesty about limits. In the Greek sense it is partly a warning: recognise what you are, and what you are not, before you overreach.
Will it suit a light-coloured wall?
Yes. The sepia and gold palette is mid-toned rather than black, so it holds its shape against off-white, stone and pale grey. The White and Natural frames suit those walls best; Black and Espresso give more contrast.
How high should it hang?
Centre the artwork at roughly eye level, around 145 to 150cm from the floor. Above a desk or sideboard, leave 20 to 25cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Does it arrive ready to hang?
Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.
Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?
It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.
Will the colours fade?
The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.
When will it arrive, and can I return it?
Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.
Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.
If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.
Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?
Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.
Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
