On trial in Athens and offered exile instead of death, Socrates turned it down. He could not stop questioning people, he said, because a life lived without examination was not worth living. The Unexamined Life Framed Canvas carries that line as Socrates quote wall art — a classical Roman bust on charcoal, with the words set in a bold serif beneath it.

Aged gold picks out the type and a thin border, and the bust is turned slightly away from the viewer rather than facing front, which gives the composition its stillness. The charcoal ground is warm rather than flat black, so it sits comfortably beside dark green, oxblood and unpainted plaster.

Most people hang it in a study or above a desk. It also has a place in the room where books actually get read, next to a lamp, where the gold catches the light in the evening.

Common Questions

Where does the quote come from?

Plato's Apology, his account of the trial of Socrates in 399 BC. Socrates says it in his own defence, after the verdict, explaining why he will not accept a sentence that requires him to give up philosophy.

What did he mean by examined?

Not self-analysis in the modern sense. He meant putting your beliefs to the test in argument — asking what you actually mean by justice or courage, and following the answer even when it makes you look foolish.

Does it need a dark wall?

No. The charcoal ground reads as a solid block against pale walls and looks intentional there. On a dark wall, choose the White or Natural frame so the edge of the piece stays visible.

What size works above a desk?

16″ or 20″ for a standard desk or console. Go to 24″ and above for a wide wall, and use the 8″ to 12″ sizes for a shelf ledge or as part of a cluster.

Choosing a Size

Available sizes are listed in the size selector above. As a rule, a canvas should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs over — measure the wall before choosing, and mark the outline with masking tape if you are between two sizes.

Canvas Questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.

Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?

It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.

Will the colours fade?

The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.

When will it arrive, and can I return it?

Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.

Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.

If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.

Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?

Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.

Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
