Roman generals returning in triumph were said to be trailed by a servant repeating one line: remember that you will die. The Memento Mori Framed Canvas gives that line a wall to sit on — classical Stoic wall art built around an antique bust, faint geometric halos and an hourglass caught mid-fall.

The palette is deliberately muted: stone grey, aged parchment, deep shadow. Up close the detail rewards a long look; from across the room it reads as a calm dark square. A matte coating keeps glare off the surface, so the tone holds in daylight and under a lamp alike.

The phrase was never meant to be morbid. For the Stoics it worked as a spur — proof that the hour in front of you is the only one you actually hold. Hung where the day begins or ends, it does that job without saying much.

Common Questions

What does Memento Mori actually mean?

It is Latin for "remember that you must die". In Stoic practice it is a corrective rather than a threat: a way of putting trivial worries in proportion and treating the present day as finite and therefore worth using well.

Which size suits an average wall?

Above a desk or a console table, 16″ × 16″ or 20″ × 20″ tends to sit best. For a chimney breast or a large empty wall, 30″ × 30″ or 36″ × 36″ gives the bust enough presence to read from a distance. The smaller sizes, 6″ to 12″, work well grouped in a gallery arrangement.

Which frame colour works with this artwork?

Black deepens the shadows and suits dark or moody interiors. Natural and espresso pick up the warm parchment tones. White lifts the piece on a pale wall and keeps the effect lighter.

Is the print glossy?

No. The finish is matte throughout, which is why it holds up opposite a window or under a downlight where a gloss canvas would reflect.

Choosing a Size

Available sizes are listed in the size selector above. As a rule, a canvas should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs over — measure the wall before choosing, and mark the outline with masking tape if you are between two sizes.

Canvas Questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. The canvas arrives stretched over its pine frame with hanging hardware already fitted, plus rubber dots on the reverse so it sits flat against the wall. No framing required.

Is it framed, or a stretched canvas?

It is a stretched canvas, not a framed print. The artwork wraps a solid pine stretcher bar and hangs as a clean-edged block with no outer frame.

Will the colours fade?

The canvas is printed with fade-resistant inks and finished with an archival-quality matte coating. As with any artwork, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve it longest.

When will it arrive, and can I return it?

Every piece is made to order, so your total wait is production time plus delivery. Orders are produced and dispatched within 2–7 business days.

Delivery then typically takes 3–7 business days in the UK, 7–14 across the EU, 5–15 in the US and Canada, and 10–20 for Australia, New Zealand and other destinations. Every order ships with tracking, and we email you the details the moment it leaves the production facility.

If it is not right, you have 30 days from delivery to request a return for any reason, including change of mind — see our Returns & Refunds Policy. If a canvas arrives damaged, send us a photograph and we will replace it or refund you in full, with nothing to send back.

Where is it made, and will I pay customs charges?

Most orders are printed and shipped inside your own region — UK orders in the UK, EU orders within the EU, US orders within the US — so they arrive as a normal domestic delivery with no customs charges to pay.

Occasionally an item is produced elsewhere, for example when a particular size or colour is only available from another facility. Your tracking will show where it shipped from, and any import charges in that case are set by your own country's customs authority rather than by us.
